The question of Indian vs western commode has been debated in Indian homes for decades. But the smartest answer — increasingly chosen by Indian homeowners — is to have both. This washroom design by Lexangrit Design Studio does exactly that, featuring an Indian style commode, a western style commode, and a glass partition between them — creating a bathroom that serves every member of the family comfortably and hygienically.
The Indian style commode remains the preferred choice for many Indian adults for health and hygiene reasons. The squatting position is widely considered more natural for the body, and many users find it more comfortable for daily use. Having a dedicated Indian WC ensures that family members who prefer the traditional style are never compromised.
The western style commode on the other hand is essential for elderly family members, children, guests, and anyone with joint or mobility concerns. A sitting toilet is significantly more accessible and comfortable for these users. The glass partition between the two WC areas is a thoughtful design detail — it provides visual separation and privacy between the two toilet zones without requiring a full wall, keeping the bathroom feeling open and well-lit.
The shower area visible in this design completes the bathroom's functionality. A dedicated shower zone keeps the wet area contained and prevents water from spreading across the entire bathroom floor — a practical necessity in Indian bathrooms where the entire floor often gets wet during bathing.
The handwash vanity unit with mirror ties the design together. A vanity unit provides storage for toiletries, cleaning supplies, and personal care products — keeping the washroom organised and clutter-free. The mirror above the vanity reflects light and makes the washroom feel more spacious — an important consideration in Indian homes where bathrooms are often compact.
